Write a "Letter to the Editor"

The local newspapers are excellent venues for expressing your opinions and getting the word out. Write a letter to the editor and say why you think the Forest Service's Travel Management Plan is a dangerous and irresponsible response to the off-road vehicle issue.

What should I say?

Here are just a few of the reasons designating the area around Canada de Los Alamos as an off-road vehicle recreation area is a bad idea. Write about these issues in your own words:

  • Threatens the watershed through environmental damage, i.e. eroding soils, polluting water and air, etc,
  • Raises fire danger from off-road vehicle igniting dry grasses and brush, and/or drivers causing fires form smoking
  • Danger to others from potential ATV accidents, speeding, drag racing. Many people have had near misses
  • Sound above traditional sound level norms both for residents and for users of the forest - affects daily life
  • Wildlife damage - animals are driven away, killed and otherwise negative impacted by off-road vehicle use
  • Small size of forest - off-road vehicle use is incompatible with other types of forest recreation such as hiking, bicycling, camping, and horseback riding, due to danger and noise issues
  • Lack of law enforcement. Victor Apodaca patrols three counties and cannot be present to enforce violations. Also, most of the ORV trails are not accessible by passenger vehicles, so law enforcement could not access them even if they were present in the forest
  • Increasing traffic from trucks and trailers full of ATVs through a traditional village, where houses are only several feet from the road
  • Lack of ability for emergency services to access ORV accident sites
